Batteries Redacted

for the Guess Where Chicago group, I redacted the address (and will reload unredacted as soon as the location is guessed).

Photo taken March 16, 1995, location now replaced by a Starbucks or a bank (or something equally generic).

Scanned from a crappy copy (negatives theoretically in Austin) of a Seattle Filmworks print. Remember them? I don't know what they do now, but Seattle Filmworks used to have a program where they would take unused pieces of cinematic film, roll and package for 35mm cameras, and send it to you via the mail. You'd return the film in the enclosed envelope, and they would process and send back. Sort of an early incarnation of Netflix. Or something.

uses a photo of mine, without crediting me.

This photo is available via Creative Commons whose terms are quite clear -
Under the following conditions:

Attribution . You must give the original author credit.

I like when my photos are used on personal web pages, and this is even a useful review of a fun bar, but is it really that hard to give proper credit to the photographer? I also always include copyright information in the photos I upload to Flickr (including contact info), and Steve Parnell stripped this info out.

Once in a Lifetime

Paul Krugman repurposes David Byrne's lyrics to fit 2007 era conservatives:

Above all, people claim to be shocked by the Bush administration’s authoritarianism, its disdain for the rule of law. But a full half-century has passed since The National Review proclaimed that “the White community in the South is entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail,” and dismissed as irrelevant objections that might be raised after “consulting a catalogue of the rights of American citizens, born Equal” — presumably a reference to the document known as the Constitution of the United States.

Now, as they survey the wreckage of their cause, conservatives may ask themselves: “Well, how did we get here?” They may tell themselves: “This is not my beautiful Right.” They may ask themselves: “My God, what have we done?”

But their movement is the same as it ever was. And Mr. Bush is movement conservatism’s true, loyal heir. [From Same Old Party - New York Times]

Krugman acknowledges his borrowing in a subsequent blog post:

A number of readers seemed to enjoy the Talking Heads reference at the end of yesterday’s column. Here’s how it happened: I knew the piece would be about various ways in which Bush is just like previous conservative standard-bearers; writing it, I found myself using a repeated phrase — “People claim to be shocked” — and realized that it had a preacher-like tone to it; and that led me to David Byrne’s preacherish lyrics. Chicago at Night

this is my September wall-calendar image

Chicago at Night
Chicago at Night, originally uploaded by swanksalot.

I was flying into Chicago at night
Watching the lake turn the sky into blue-green smoke
The sun was setting to the left of the plane
And the cabin was filled with an unearthly glow
In 27-D I was behind the wing
Watching landscape roll out
Like credits on a screen
The earth looked like it was lit from within
Like a poorly assembled electrical ball as we moved
Out of the farmlands into the grid
The plan of the city was all that you saw
And all of these people sitting totally still
As the ground raced beneath them thirty thousand feet down

It took an hour, maybe a day
But once I really listened, the noise
Just went away

And I was pretending that I was in a Galaxie 500 video
The stewardess came back and checked on my drink
In the last strings of sunlight, a Bridgette Bardot
There's a hat on my headphones
Along with those eyes that you get
When your circumstance is movie size
